What Is a Salve and Why Should You Use One?

Updated: Jun 7

Whether you are new to the world of holistic self-care or not, it would be pretty hard to not run into healing salves in today’s herbal microcosm. With the resurgence of DIY beauty, a multitude of inventive recipes and products have filled up the internet as well as brick and mortar personal care retail shelves. And it’s no surprise. Salves are simple to use, easy to carry, and require no special storage. And they offer their own unique benefits for the most overlooked and difficult areas of the body to maintain.

Some of you might still be wondering what they are, how they function, and why or how you might use them. Just know, you are not alone. Believe it or not, these are questions I still get asked regularly by even the most sophisticated beauty and skincare experts when I talk about my own calendula-based, Sacred Hana Salve.

Put simply, a salve is an ointment you can use to heal, soothe, or moisturize your skin. Its main ingredients are beeswax or carnauba wax if you’re a vegan and oils, which gives it a thick and semi-solid appearance that’s similar to a balm. People often get confused over the distinction. They are in all practical ways the same. Generally, though, salves are thicker than balms and contain more beeswax.

Benefits of Salves

Salves have terrific multi-functionality. Due to their ability to soothe skin, salves have traditionally been used for medicinal purposes, especially for wounds. They can also help with sunburn, eczema, bug bites, and even nappy rash.

Everyday use.

You don’t need to be injured to use them. Salves also do a great job at hydrating rough or dry areas of the body, or simply preventing damage in the future by strengthening the skin and making it less likely to break. Cuticles, heels, knees, elbows, and hands are common targets.

Easy-peasy.

One thing I personally love about salves is that you can throw one in a small purse or place it in a pants pocket. Carrying a salve around doesn’t require any special handling or storing because they are generally solid and therefore spill-proof.

They last a long time!

The more you rub a salve in its container the softer it gets over time and the less you need to apply for each use. Even a 1- or 2-ounce tin is bound to last at least a couple of months which makes them extremely affordable as well as nutritious for the body. That’s a lot of bang for your buck - a plus, plus, considering how expensive skin can become.

They make great gifts.

As stocking stuffers or stand-alone offerings, salves make a beautiful presentation. Fragrant and clean to the touch, they are an appealing, useful present for anyone.

Try it for yourself.
